Description

5G Moves from Trials to Commercial Reality: What's Next?
September 12, 2018 – 7:30AM-9:05AM

If 2017 was the year of tests and trials, 2018 is when we’re finally seeing 5G emerge in the form of early commercial deployments. This is two years sooner than the industry originally anticipated.

Some will argue that the real, true 5G won’t come until 2019, when OEMs launch their 5G-ready devices. Then there’s all the industries outside of wireless that need to be 5G-ready. And it really, really won’t have fully arrived until commercially available autonomous cars are actually powered by 5G on roads, which is an even longer ways off.

Others argue that a lot of the hype about 5G today is really about what happens 10 years from now, not this year or in the next few years. Still, that isn’t stopping the nationwide U.S. wireless carriers from putting their stakes in the ground and declaring their own services to be first in 5G.

There’s still a long way to go. The nation’s first millimeter wave spectrum auction isn’t due to start until November and there remains a lot of spectrum that needs to be doled out for 5G. Operators also need to make sure their networks are capable of the kinds of automation that are required—that means being capable of running SDN and NFV.

Operators have been talking about their 5G deployments for years now, and they’ve been investing heavily in R&D. Now it’s time to see where the rubber meets the road. This session will examine the current state of 5G affairs and where the industry is headed in the months to come—and what is truly 5G and what is not.
