According to Machina Research, the number of IoT connections will increase fourfold between 2016 and 2025 in North America, reaching nearly 6 billion. Furthermore, by 2025, North America will have nearly 210 million 5G connections (© GSMA Intelligence 2018). In 2016, mobile technologies and services generated 3.9% of GDP in North America, a contribution that amounted to $790 billion of economic value added. By the end of the decade, this contribution will increase to just over $1 trillion (4.7% of GDP) as greater use of mobile technologies, including M2M and IoT solutions, drives improvements in productivity (© GSMA Intelligence 2018).
North America is expected to see the same rapid pace of adoption of 5G services as seen with 4G. 5G adoption will occur faster than in any other region – around half of connections will be on 5G networks by 2025, compared to around 30% in Europe and the leading Asian markets (© GSMA Intelligence 2018).
As new technologies mature (AI, autonomous vehicles, data analytics, advanced AR/VR), new use cases for 5G will likely emerge, particularly in the enterprise segment, which is largely considered the major source of new operator revenues for 5G.
